WABI Club History
The Curaçao Wabi Club history.
On
October 31st 1965 the Curaçao Wabi Club was officially started. Before
that, Benjamin "Shon Benchi" Wefer took an old Ford from the "mondi"
(=bush) and fixed her up. In the beginning it was a joke to call the
cars "Wabi", and as the story goes when Shon Benchi removed the car,
there was a "Wabi-tree" growing where the engine used to be. Soon after
this, old cars were named Wabi, and this started out to become a
serious car club. See some pictures of the original 1928 Ford here. The
Wabi-tree growing through the Ford was also in full bloom with small
yellow flowers, and hence the color for the Wabi club was set!
As
you can see there was not much left of the car, a 1928 Ford A
Convertible, when Shon Benchi removed it from the "mondi". Slowly he
fixed "Helena"
(as he would name her) to it's beautiful state clearly seen in the
third picture. Later the car would even be used to drive thru town with
the local "Carnaval princess"!
Hearsay:
It is said that the WabiClub used to have it's own clubhouse some time
ago. A building that was rented from the "Fraternan di Skerpene" for
only Nafl. 85,00 (approx. US$ 40.00).
